Since 1965
Our first Club Patron was Arthur Mailey, who took 99 wickets in 21 Tests for Australia from 1920 to 1926. On 16 February 1921, the 4th Test between Australia and England at the MCG ended. In England’s 2nd innings, Mailey took 9-121 from 47 overs. In those days, they were 8-ball overs, so it’s the equivalent of 62.4 overs today. He is still the only Australian bowler to take 9 wickets in an innings in Tests. The next best bowling figures in an innings by an Australian is 8-24, by Glenn McGrath against Pakistan at the WACA in 2004-05.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Arthur Mailey’s achievement, Cricket Australia has posted this outstanding article on their website today: Arthur Mailey 9-121.
